Our Review
This is a difficult one to write a review about, the Pier House employees have done an excellent job of not speaking to us by referring us to Pier House executives, and the Pier House executives we keep getting referred to do an excellent job of being in meetings. This is ongoing as I try to at least arrange a phone interview as we were not able to arrange one during our trip to Key West. I cannot help but wonder if this is a reflection of how they feel about their guests, or just far flung reviewers.

Okay, about the Pier House itself...

There is no 'house' to the Pier House, it is a very large property many stories tall smack dab on the gulf beach overlooking Sunset Key. We spoke with the concierge briefly, and were invited to tour the grounds. The grounds are admirable, to say the least! The day was very windy, and the hotel being on the windward took the brunt of it. Guests were off finding more indoorsy things to do. We had plenty of time and space to take our pictures without disturbing a soul.

There are tropical atriums located throughout, and it is built to last with solid construction underneath on the first few floors (think 'tidal surge').

We take hints on places where we can find them, and we found a good one: employees who did not have to say a word voluntarily chose to say nice things about the place they work in... if you ever want to know the measure of a company, look to its employees!

There are three 'zones' to Duval Street, and this obviously sits on the 'party' end on the gulf. The location is tops, it is right on the water with its own little beach and dock/restaurant/tikibar. The Pier House is expensive, it is situated on one of the most prime pieces of real estate in the country, and you will be the one paying rent on it.

If I say this is 'expensive', think of what happened after you heard the words 'you may feel a slight pinch'. The results will be much the same.

The surrounding area offers some of the most funky shops, museums, and fine dining. It is as if Duval Street were not long enough and the funkiness that travels down its length hit the waterfront at such a high velocity that it mushroomed out into the surrounding neighborhoods.

Besides Duval, it is one short block from Mallory Square and the daily sunset festivities (any excuse or non at all is good enough for a party on Key West!). It also sits next to the dock where all the diving, touring, glass-bottomed, and any other kind of boat-centered tour will launch out of, which is very convenient and should be taken advantage of as much as you can.

Do check into a tour of the Marquesas and the Dry Tortugas if you can spare a day, and the glass bottomed boat is great during midday.

My overall feeling about the Pier House was that it would be a great place to spend a honeymoon. If you really need to be 'wowed' by the experience of being in a resort and do not mind paying more for it, you are good to go. The people are nice (of those we met) and are most professional. They will take good care of you, and you need not give the service a second thought.

Compare the Pier House to the Ocean Key Resort across the street. They are both nice, but they are both comparable, and the Ocean Key has a better dock for viewing the sunsets.

Customer Review
Our spa garden room was not worth the hefty price tag (and I've traveled all over the world), but the Jacuzzi was the biggest I've seen; our beds were awful, I left with a backache. Also, our window was stuck, so we never got to open it. The dining, however, was amazing, the restaurant staff prepared an amazing private dinner for us on the beach, and bent over backwards to make sure it was special. Overall, I think the staff was very friendly and helpful, but the amenities left something to be desired.

It was bachelorette party weekend for 7 of us & we arrived at 1 AM. The man in the front desk was extremely pleasant & offer all the help. Initially we had 2 rooms, 1 of the room smell smoke so we requested to change to a different room. The gentleman changed us to the most gorgeous, relaxing, super clean and beautiful view suite. We had a blast time. The best hotel and service we ever had. We would like to send a special thank to the gentleman that switch our suite had made a big difference so much more enjoyable & memorable. You guys are the best!! I highly recommend.
