Our Review
Despite the Best Western logo on the marquee, this
is a family owned and operated hotel. That can be
either a good or bad thing, and in this case it is
a good thing.
The Best Western Key Ambassador hotel has been in
a single family since the 1950s, and is very well
maintained. You can almost sense that the owners are
house-proud of their hotel.
Armida the general manager was kind enough to spend
a few moments speaking about the hotel she cares for.
She speaks of the owners on friendly terms, how they
take an active interest in the hotel down to minutiae
such as lawn care. She speaks of the family atmosphere,
and she speaks of a 20% return rate for guests.
But mostly she speaks in terms of lives and living,
how families who vacationed with their children when
the Key Ambassador first opened returned over the
years vacationing with children of their own. She
speaks of how they are now seeing grandchildren. Three
generations of patrons.
The lobby is small but efficient, with plenty of
doors for traffic flow. The floor to ceiling glass
overlooks a brief strip of asphalt, and then nothing
but ocean. Armida waves almost apologetically at the
lobby, and mentions that it will be getting a speedy
renovation shortly. I see nothing wrong with the lobby
as it is, it sparkles.
The Best Western Key Ambassador Resort sits on the
same side of the island as the Sheraton and Doubletree.
There is a thin public beach across and down the street.
This is a great place for a family, Armida is right.
It is not walking distance to the bars, but you will
not have to keep a constant hawkeye on your kids here.
Maybe you parents could relax here a little more than
you could elsewhere.
As discussed elsewhere on this site, this is a small
island, and you do not need to be "near"
anything for the accommodation to be good. All of
the non-resort chain hotels are even further away
from Duval than the Best Western Key Ambassador, and
no one has complained about that. Same here.
Families, rent a car. Everyone else use cabs, rent
an electric car, rent scooters or bikes, and save
money (see link).
I think this is a very good hotel for what it is,
and although I did not stay here during this review
trip, you can bet your bottom dollar I will in a future
one. Overall, I like the people, the property, and
the vibe.
Customer Review
This hotel met all our expectations. The pool area
is absolutely lovely..with a view of the ocean across
the street. Staff was cordial and accommodating. Rooms
were exceptionally clean and the breakfast was very
nice. Would highly recommend!
Customer Review
We've stayed here twice. If you're looking for an
economical yet quality room, this is a good choice.
Rooms are what you'd expect, and the continental breakfast
is excellent. Walking distance (!) to airport. Away
from hustle of old town. Great pool and tiki bar.
Staff always accommodating.
Customer Review
This was our second time to Key West and we made a
big mistake going here. NOT walking distance to Duval
St., the room was horrible, the A/C blew directly
on the bed, the room was very smelly. There are so
many better places to stay on the Key.
Customer Review
This is one of the worst, and most expensive hotels
we've stayed in. The rooms were very smelly and dirty.
The Air Conditioner/Heater blew directly on the beds.
It was SO bad we had to change rooms and the second
room wasn't much better. Can't walk to anywhere from
this hotel. The pool and grounds were exceptional,
but we will never stay here nor recommend this place.
There are too many better options elsewhere.
Customer Review
the mattresses were too hard. The cheekie hut by the
pool is cool. The pool was the bomb awesome surroundings.
Best stay we've ever had in Florida.
